Allow two to four hours, keep to the waterfront if anyone in your group prefers level ground, and skip the National Museum: its own website reports it is permanently closed.

St. George’s is one of those places that does most of the work for you. You step off the ship and the town is right there: a horseshoe harbour ringed with pastel warehouses, green hills rising steeply behind it, and fishing boats tied up where the cruise passengers walk. You do not need a booked excursion to enjoy it. You need comfortable shoes and a realistic sense of the hills.

Where you start

Ships dock at the Melville Street cruise terminal. The Grenada Ports Authority describes it as sitting next to the Welcome Centre, with shopping and taxi pickup alongside, and the Carenage roughly a ten-minute walk away.

That ten minutes is the single most useful number for planning a St. George’s day. It means the heart of the town is comfortably inside any port call, and it means you can go back to the ship mid-day if you want to.

The two-level town

The thing to understand about St. George’s before you set off is that it operates on two levels, and they demand completely different things of you.

The waterfront level — the terminal, Melville Street, the market area and the Carenage — is essentially flat, sheltered in places, and where most of the shops, cafés and photographs are. This is where a relaxed two-hour wander lives.

The upper level — everything climbing the ridge behind the harbour, including the forts and the best viewpoints — involves steep streets and steps in full sun. The views are excellent and worth the effort if your group is up for it. If anyone is unsure, do not talk them into it on a port day.

Plan for the waterfront and treat any climb as an optional extra you decide on once you have seen the hill.

A sensible self-guided route

This is the version that works for most people, in the order that makes sense on the ground.

Terminal and Welcome Centre. Get your bearings, sort out cash if you need it, and note the way back.

Melville Street towards the market area. The working side of town, busiest in the morning.

Across to the Carenage. The set-piece view. Follow the horseshoe round; the whole curve is walkable and it is the best stretch for photographs, particularly looking back towards the ships.

Young Street for House of Chocolate. A small cocoa museum, café and shop at number 10 — see the note below.

A viewpoint climb, if the group is willing. This is where you get the shot looking down over the harbour and the roofs.

Back along the water. Allow more time than you think for the last stretch; it is a long day by this point.

Two to three hours covers the waterfront comfortably. Four gives you a climb, a proper lunch and no rush.

Two things to know before you go

The Grenada National Museum is closed. Its own website currently reports permanent closure. It still appears as a headline stop in older guidebooks and port articles, and people do still walk up to it. Do not build your route around it.

House of Chocolate has unreliable published hours. It is a genuinely nice stop — a small cocoa museum with a café and shop at 10 Young Street — and it is one of the better indoor options if the weather turns. But its official site does not publish dependable current opening hours, so treat it as a bonus rather than a fixed appointment, and check on the day.

This is a good general rule for a port day anywhere: any plan that depends on one specific venue being open is a fragile plan.

What to bring

Water, and more than you think in the heat

Sun protection — the waterfront has limited shade

Comfortable shoes with grip, for steep and sometimes uneven streets

A small amount of cash for the market and smaller vendors

A light rain layer, because showers pass through quickly

An offline map, and your ship’s name and all-aboard time written down

Ship time

Ship time is your responsibility. Published arrival and departure times change. Your cruise line and onboard app are the only authority for your all-aboard time. Check them on the morning of the call, and build your plan backwards from that time — not from the times on this page.

The advantage of a town day is that your return leg is short and entirely under your control. Even so, fix the time you will start walking back, and allow for the security queue at the terminal — it builds up noticeably in the last hour before departure.

The Maurice Bishop memorial at Fort George – worth pausing over. If you want the town and a view from further up, or the town and the beach, you need transport — and on a port day the option that does not involve waiting for anyone is your own.

Electric assist matters here specifically because of the hills. The climb that makes a walking group turn back is a pleasant two minutes with a motor helping.

Explore Grenada for less with friends

Standard self-guided e-bike day rentals are priced per rider, per day, and the rate drops as your group grows.

Group size

Price per e-bike, per day

You save

1-3 riders

$40

Standard rate

4-5 riders

$35 each

$5 each (12.5%)

6+ riders

$30 each

$10 each (25%)

A group of six riding at the standard rate would pay $240 for the day. At the 6+ group rate the same six riders pay $180 — a saving of $60 on one day’s riding. The discount is applied to the whole booking, so it is worth asking the two friends who are undecided before you book.

These rates cover standard self-guided day rentals. Guided, private and custom tours are priced separately.

Collection and return times

Standard collection is 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday, and 9am to 2pm on Saturday.

Two things matter if you are arriving by ship:

Saturday returns are extended to 5pm for cruise passengers. A Saturday port call is not limited by the 2pm shop close — tell us your ship and date when you book.

Sunday rides can be arranged on request. The shop is closed to walk-ins on Sundays, but contact us with your date and we will make arrangements where we can.

If your ship docks before 9am, say so when you book. Most Caribbean calls arrive between 7:30am and 8am, so there is usually a short gap before collection — easily absorbed with a coffee on the Carenage, provided you have planned for it rather than discovered it.

Ready to ride?

Check e-bike availability with Grenada Urban E-Mobility and tell us your dates and group size. If you are arriving by ship, include the vessel name and your arrival date so we can line the handover up with your time ashore.

Prefer a guided walk or ride?

If you would rather have local context, a set route and someone handling the timing, a guided or private experience is the better fit — especially for larger groups.

Interested in a guided or private e-bike experience?

Tour pricing varies with your group size, itinerary, duration, guide requirements and cruise timing, so we quote each one rather than publishing a single figure.

Contact us for current tour pricing and availability. To get an accurate quote first time, tell us:

your preferred date

how many riders

your ship, if you are visiting on a cruise

roughly how much time you have ashore

the places you would most like to see

whether you want a private ride or are happy in a shared group

If it rains

St. George’s is the most rain-resilient plan on the island, because the indoor options and the way back to the ship are both close. Our rainy-day cruise plan has the fallbacks worth knowing.

The one-line version

Walk the Carenage, keep to the water unless the group is keen on hills, do not plan around the museum, check House of Chocolate’s hours on the day, and be back at the terminal earlier than feels necessary.

Sources and verification

We link the primary sources behind the factual claims on this page so you can check them yourself before you travel.

Grenada Ports Authority – Cruise Terminus

Grenada Ports Authority – Port of St. George’s

House of Chocolate, St. George’s

Grenada National Museum – current status

You can see the best of St. George’s on foot from the ship without booking anything.
