Most port-day advice is written as though every ship were the same size. Arvia is not. She is one of P&O’s largest ships, carrying roughly 5,200 guests, with a predominantly British passenger base — and on a Caribbean island the size of Grenada, that scale is the single most important planning fact of your day.
Why the ship’s size changes your plan
When several thousand people come ashore in a short window, three things happen predictably:
- Taxis queue. Not indefinitely, but the first hour after disembarkation is the busiest it will be all day.
- The obvious stops fill up. Grand Anse is a long beach and absorbs visitors well, but the nearest, easiest sections fill first.
- Everything takes slightly longer. Ordering lunch, paying, getting served. Not dramatically, but it adds up across a day.
None of this ruins a Grenada port day. It simply rewards two behaviours: deciding in advance, and being slightly out of step with the crowd. Going a little earlier or a little later than the peak makes a noticeable difference.

Ship time is your responsibility. Published arrival and departure times change. Your cruise line and onboard app are the only authority for your all-aboard time. Check them on the morning of the call, and build your plan backwards from that time — not from the times on this page.
Three plans that work from Arvia
Option 1: the compact town day
Walk into St. George’s, follow the Carenage, browse, and have lunch on the water. The Grenada Ports Authority puts the Carenage around ten minutes from the terminal on foot.
This is the right choice if you disembark later than planned, if the weather is unsettled, or if your party’s walking pace varies. Its great advantage on a big-ship day is that it does not depend on transport at all — you are never waiting behind several thousand other people for a taxi. Option 2: Grand Anse as the main event
Commit to the beach properly rather than treating it as one stop among several. Agree how you are getting back and what time you are leaving before you settle in — on a large-ship day, the return leg is the part that catches people out.
Walking a few minutes further along the sand than everyone else is the single best move available to you. The beach is long; the crowd is not evenly spread.
Option 3: a pre-booked active day
Riding is the option that removes queueing from your day entirely. Once the bikes are handed over, you are not waiting for anything or anyone — which on an Arvia day is worth more than it sounds.

Booking in advance genuinely matters on a large-ship call. Availability is finite, and several thousand people are making plans on the same morning.
Collection and return times
Standard collection is 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday, and 9am to 2pm on Saturday.
Two things matter if you are arriving by ship:
- Saturday returns are extended to 5pm for cruise passengers. A Saturday port call is not limited by the 2pm shop close — tell us your ship and date when you book.
- Sunday rides can be arranged on request. The shop is closed to walk-ins on Sundays, but contact us with your date and we will make arrangements where we can.
If your ship docks before 9am, say so when you book. Most Caribbean calls arrive between 7:30am and 8am, so there is usually a short gap before collection — easily absorbed with a coffee on the Carenage, provided you have planned for it rather than discovered it.
